How do you introduce yourself to potential friends on Facebook?  facebook friendsOnce the initial upload and connection of your current contacts has been made, what strategy do you use to find old friends, classmates and co-workers?  What about new people like gurus in your industry that you want to connect with and follow their successes?  Here are a few ideas to help with finding and introducing yourself to new friends on Facebook.

  1. Search for friends based on location, school, college and workplace.  You can quickly connect with old friends from your past (if you want to, that is) :) using this method.
  2. Look for those leaders in your industry and connect with them.  Comment on their Wall after the connection has been confirmed.
  3. When requested new friends, Please and I repeat, Please add a message to your request.  Even if you just say something like, Hi Joe, we met recently at a networking event downtown and I’d like to keep up with you on Facebook.  That’s all you need to say.  As more and more Facebookers near that 5,000 friend maximum they will be evaluating more closely who they connect with and if they do not know you personally or can’t determine if there is a reason to connect with you, they might just ignore your request.  You don’t want this to happen if they are someone you would eventually like to partner with or have some type of business relationship with.  So add a short comment to your invitation and 99% of the time your request will be confirmed.
  4. Join Groups and Like Pages on Facebook and connect with the Administrator.  Especially if this is your target market.  Introduce yourself to the administrator and post comments on the Wall either in response to questions or just for helpful links to share with the others in the group.  This is great positioning for you as an expert.
  5. As others request to be your friend, visit their Wall and thank them for the connection request and see what they are interested in.  You might find that you both love to water ski.  You could start a great conversation around that topic and who knows, even start a joint venture partnership for an online business around water skiing!

    Great tips Terri. Thanks.

I have a question about Facebook. When you “comment” on something on your wall, can you tag your friends there? I tried it and it won’t work.
